MGPI Inc. has been bringing great product ideas to life across the alcoholic beverage and speciality ingredient industry since 1941 from its operations across the US, Mexico and Northern Ireland. The business has 3 sectors; an award-winning portfolio of premium brands including bourbons and tequila; distilled spirits operations for customers; and high-quality ingredients providing solutions for a wide range of food products.

The new CEO coming into the business last year refreshed and reset the business strategy prioritising marketing capabilities to drive opportunities across the portfolio particularly in premium brands. She asked us to identify a Chief Marketing Officer with superb functional skills combined with the mindset of a General Manager to quickly operationalise the first steps of the new strategy.

Search Process

Pace with precision

The search concentrated on several key dimensions; a deep understanding of the sector and how to grow premium and heritage brands; an instinct for innovation opportunities; and a close connection to key locations like the St Louis operations, and those of customers and other distillery sites across the US.

They had to be able to demonstrate their experience and influence at Board level and to seize the initiative to excite colleagues on the potential of the portfolio and opportunities to leverage the experiential qualities of their iconic distilleries.

Some searches go far and wide, we agreed with MGPI that this one had to be targeted and more localised in its point of focus.

Results

Accelerating the vision

The successful candidate has big company experience in the US and internationally, working in several senior Marketing roles but also in General Management roles with broader operational responsibility.

He has adeptly integrated into the organisation and has dived into consumer insights to evolve and drive the strategy, speedily aligning teams and resources against the main value opportunities.
